Nobody Loves You when You're Down & Out

The Washington Post is reporting that Marion "Pat" Robertson's Christian Coalition has fallen on hard times. My heart breaks. According to the article, the organization is $2 million in debt, weighted down by lawsuits from creditors, and state chapters are closing up shop.

"In March, one of its most effective chapters, the Christian Coalition of Iowa, cut ties with the national organization," the Post reports, "And reincorporated itself as the Iowa Christian Alliance, saying it 'found it impossible to continue to carry a name that in any way associated us with this national organization.'"

The Coalition's problem stem from two sources - its founders. Pat Roberson's crazier than a cork anchor and Ralph Reed's crooked. Reed's been implicated in the Abramoff scandal. He's running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, but he's - not surprisingly - polling at an anemic 39%, down from 54% before the scandal broke (poll numbers from Talk to Action).

Man, the wheels just seem to be coming off this rightwing political machine lately. Maybe Pat can turn this all around by telling people that the devil's behind the whole thing.

It wouldn't be the craziest thing he's ever said.
